How I Adapt EMDR for Different Types of Trauma and Why Intensives Can Be So Powerful

When people hear the word trauma, they often think of one big event. A car accident. An assault. A single moment that changed everything. While that can absolutely be true, trauma is often much more layered. It can be ongoing, relational, subtle, or rooted in experiences that were never named as trauma at the time.

As a therapist offering EMDR therapy in Las Vegas and Summerlin, I work with individuals whose nervous systems learned to stay on high alert for many different reasons. EMDR is one of the most flexible and effective tools I use because it can be adapted to meet people exactly where they are.

What EMDR Therapy Really Is

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. At its core, EMDR helps the brain process memories that feel stuck. When something overwhelming happens, the brain does not always get the chance to fully process the experience. Instead, the memory can remain stored in a way that keeps the body reacting as if the event is still happening.

This is why people may feel intense anxiety, panic, emotional shutdown, or physical reactions even when they logically know they are safe. EMDR works by using bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess those memories so they no longer feel as charged or present.

One of the most important things to know about EMDR is that it is not just for one type of trauma. I adapt EMDR therapy for a wide range of experiences, including:

I take a trauma informed and integrative approach to EMDR therapy. That means I blend EMDR with parts work, somatic awareness, mindfulness, and compassion focused techniques. Some sessions may involve active processing. Others may focus on preparation, nervous system regulation, or strengthening internal safety.

EMDR is not about forcing memories or reliving pain. It is about allowing your brain and body to finally complete what they could not before.

For some clients, weekly therapy feels too slow or too disruptive to daily life. This is where EMDR Intensives can be incredibly helpful.

An EMDR Intensive allows us to work in longer focused sessions over a shorter period of time. This can look like a half day or multiple extended sessions scheduled close together. Intensives are especially helpful for people who
